“And Jesus said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”  (Mark 1:17)

I memorized this verse in the NIV: “And Jesus said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”  The NASB, KJV, NKJ, and the ESV (listed above) translate it as, “I will make you to become.” That reaffirms to me that discipleship doesn’t happen overnight, it is a process. Please note that this was said to Simon and Andrew who were fisherman, a common ordinary profession of that day.   Verse 18 states that after Jesus called for them to follow Him, “immediately they left their nets and followed Him.”   So, just what is required to become a disciple of Jesus? The first thing is to step out in faith “to follow Jesus.” I don’t believe that Simon and Andrew thought much about this, they simply responded. I believe that the response that Jesus wants from us is to immediately leave our life of living unto ourselves to follow or live for Jesus Christ. Once we answer the call to “follow Jesus” He will begin the work of helping us “to become” fishers of men. Part of the “becoming” part has to do with our attentiveness to the teacher and our willingness to obey what He shows us. My blog from Tuesday stated that I wanted to commit myself to two things as I study the life of Jesus in the gospel of Mark? First, I want to believe what Jesus stated. Second, I want to obey what He shows me to do. If you call yourself a Christ-follower, answer the call to “follow Jesus” and to let “Him make you to become fishers of men.”
